Hey, remember back in the old days when you could post a picture on Twitter and not have it ransacked by news organisations and picture agencies? Yeah, those days are gone. All these picture sharing apps are looking lovingly at the feed of images coming in and licking their lips. Whether you like it or not, one day these apps will have to monetize and there is gold in them there photos…
So there’s been a huge blow-up around the use of these images. Twitpic is being reported as claiming the copyright on your images. And entertainment news and photo group WENN has signed a deal with the photo app, ” to represent those images.” Oh really? How convenient for everyone. But what about the users?
Of course that means there is now a space for a startup to come along and give control back to the users.
Step forward MobyPicture.
They’ve just now tweaked their ToS conditions thus:
“Content Ownership:
All rights of uploaded content by our users remain the property of our users and can in no means be sold or used by Mobypicture or affiliated third party partners without consent from the user. This means Mobypicture will NEVER sell the rights to your shared photos and videos. Your content is yours!”
They are also implementing the Creative Commons Licenses on their new MobyNext platform which allows you to send your images from social apps to many photo sharing sites like Flickr and Facebook.
In addition they plan to launch a new service called Mediaportability.com which will let you “move all your content from and to the most important social sites automatically.” You can also use the service to move your Mobypicture postings to any other site or download these to your computer or iPad.
