Amazon Now Offering 4K Streaming For Movies And TV Shows On Prime Instant Video

Amazon has upped its streaming game, offering up 4K or Ultra HD resolution for certain movies and TV titles to Prime subscribers via Amazon Instant Video. The content available in Ultra HD includes Amazon original content, with Alpha House and Transparent, and Orphan Black, the Canadian-made BBC America sci-fi thriller. Sony Pictures movies, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Funny Girl, Hitch and Philadelphia are also now available in 4k.

The Ultra HD content will require an Ultra HD display, which Amazon says include TVs from LG, Samsung and Sony. It’s all available without any additional fees or costs on the part of users, and will include Amazon Original content from upcoming series’, including the recently green lighted Red Oaks, Hand of God and more. Upcoming pilots vying for full slates are also going to be presented in Ultra HD.

Amazon’s move to provide UHD content makes it one of the first major digital media providers to do so, joining a limited trial by fellow streamer Netflix, as well as some traditional service providers like DirectTV. In addition to their streaming for Prime members, Amazon will also begin retailing 4K movies from Sony Pictures, available starting at $19.99 for a one-time purchase.
