Good News, Everyone! Chrome Just Killed Flash Ads

Chrome, the browser used by over 50% of the Internet, is officially preferring HTML5 ads over Flash content, a move that should finally dump the failed media platform into the trash heap of history. Quoth Google:

In June, we announced that Chrome will begin pausing many Flash ads by default to improve performance for users. This change is scheduled to start rolling out on September 1, 2015.

Google warned Flash users and even supplied a helpful converter that would turn Flash ads into HTML5 automatically. The switch will essentially pause Flash content on most webpages, turning those old “Punch The Monkey” ads into still life. This also means most Flash content won’t be served to Chrome users.

Amazon is also moving to reduce Flash advertisements and almost all video playback services have already banned it. You’ll still see it here and here – like morning glory, it’s hard to kill – but here’s hoping Flash will soon dry up and fade away.
