Plex Arrives On PS4 And PS3 In Europe And Asia, U.S. Launch Coming Later

The one puzzle piece I needed to complete my Ultimate Home Theater setup has finally arrived: Plex is available for PlayStation 4 and PS3 in the U.K, Europe and Asia, with an app live in the PlayStation Store. The Plex app for Sony’s latest console follows the launch of the media streamer on Xbox One back in October. At the time, Plex’s co-founder Scott Olechowski hinted that a PS4 version might be on the way, but there was no firm commitment to any kind of timely release.

Plex on the PS4 adopts essentially the same interface as it has on the Xbox One, which favors a more linear horizontal browsing experience, designed to improve discoverability of the content housed in your library that you’re either most interested in, or might have overlooked.

At launch, Plex for PlayStation is limited to Plex Pass subscribers only, meaning you’ll have to have one of the company’s paid memberships to participate. If you do, however, you’ll be able to connect to your Plex Media Server, and stream video content from that source in either 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolution. Metadata, casting information, release dates and summaries are also automatically appended to all your stored shows and movies.

Users in the U.S. and Canada will have to wait a little longer for Plex, however; the company says it’s coming “soon,” and sources suggest that translates to sometime early in 2015.
